BOONE—Eduardo Vargas conducts the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra in a performance Thursday, Dec. 8, at Appalachian State University. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on campus. Admission is free.

Vargas joined the faculty in Appalachian’s Hayes School of Music this year as interim conductor of the orchestra.

The program features Dvořák’s “Carnival Overture, Op. 92,” Debussy’s “Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun,” Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67,” considered one of his greatest works.

Vargas was founder and music director of the Chamber Orchestra of Bolivia. He has guest-conducted the Bolivian National Symphony Orchestra, the University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and the UNC Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. He is the current conductor of UNCG’s String Orchestra.

He has performed as soloist with the La Paz Chamber Orchestra, Bolivia, and with the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia, with which he has also served as principal cellist. He has also been a member of the Tuscaloosa Symphony and associate principal cellist with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra in Alabama.

Vargas also has held cello and chamber music teaching positions at the National Conservatory of Bolivia.
