SLIDESHOWS: "Christmas in Blowing Rock 3" A Feel-Good Warm Up for Holidays
By David Rogers. December 17, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- There is something "warm and fuzzy" about kicking off the holiday season with a Christmas musical production featuring local "community" performers. Many of them you know and some of them might be close friends. And when you think that none of them are getting paid to share their talents with you in bringing this holiday cheer -- well, it feels even better, because you understand and share in their passion.
A holiday-themed variety show patterned after Perry Como and Andy Williams TV productions of days gone by and showcasing performers from the High Country, Christmas in Blowing Rock (CBR) is now in its third season at Blowing Rock School Auditorium, produced by professional theatre company Ensemble Stage of Blowing Rock. Of the three productions, this one arguably features the overall best talent -- and much of it first rate whether comparing it to professional or other community shows.
Artistic Director Gary Smith confided to Blowing Rock News beforehand that this production, in particular, has faced some unusual challenges in reaching opening night. "Community theatre nearly always faces logistical problems with the actors and performers having to work rehearsals around busy lives, including work and school obligations. This one has been a bit more challenging than with three cases of the flu, surgery, strep throat, lighting issues, you name it. Tonight is only the third time we have had the entire cast onstage together," he said. "But we love community theater and this cast has worked hard at overcoming the challenges -- and, of course, the show must go on!"
And on it did, splendidly -- and it looked like everyone was having fun.
CBR3 was written by Lisa Lamont and Gary Smith, with musical direction by Blake Pace, choreography by Shauna Godwin Hamby, set design by Aaron Bridgman, and lighting design by Dan Koppenhaver.
If you missed Friday or Saturday night's performances, you still have a chance to catch Sunday afternoon's matinee. Tickets are $14 for adults, and $8 children. Visit www.ensemblestage.com for more information, or purchase tickets at the door, as available.
