Special Report to Blowing Rock News from University News Service. January 9, 2012. BOONE—Deborah Miller of Blacksburg, Va., has been named assistant vice chancellor for advancement services in Appalachian State University’s division of University Advancement.

Miller, who begins her duties Jan. 23, will manage information regarding all aspects of advancement work, collect and analyze information, and provide reports to support solicitation and alumni engagement activities. She also will support other activities related to donor prospect research and donor stewardship.

Appalachian recently announced a $200 million fundraising campaign, the largest campaign in the university’s history. The new position will be vital to the success of the campaign, according to Susan Pettyjohn, vice chancellor for university advancement.

“Debbie is a national leader in the field of advancement services and we are thrilled to have her join our advancement team,” Pettyjohn said.

Miller has more than 20 years of development experience including major gift fundraising for public and private higher education institutions, experience working on more than a dozen comprehensive campaigns ranging in size from $50 million to $5 billion and extensive knowledge of industry best practices in advancement services and prospect development.

She joins Appalachian from Philanthropy Inc., where she was a managing partner in private consulting specializing in nonprofit management, advancement services and campaign/major gift fundraising. She also has had consulting positions with HEP Development Services, Blackbaud and Donor Perfect.
