Stanley Named to Internal Audits Post
Special Report to Blowing Rock News from University News Service. October 31, 2011. BOONE—A longtime employee of Appalachian State University has been named director of internal audits.
Michael D. Stanley, who has been interim controller in Appalachian’s Office of Business Affairs, was chosen to lead the university’s Office of Internal Audits following a nationwide search. His appointment will be effective Nov. 14.
“I am excited to be given the opportunity to serve as director of internal audits and look forward to continue working with the Appalachian community,” Stanley said.
Stanley has a B.S.B.A. from Appalachian and is a certified public accountant (CPA). He came to the university in 1985 after working for Deloitte, Haskins and Sells accounting firm. He has been an accountant for New River Light and Power and director of the Office of Student Accounts at Appalachian. Stanley was named assistant controller in 1999 and interim controller in 2007.
“Mike comes to this leadership position with a strong track record of integrity, high professional standards and strong technical skills. His extensive knowledge of the university, his understanding in the Banner Enterprise System, and his experience working with state budgets and financial reporting systems made him the search committee’s top choice for the position,” said committee chair Denise Foutz.
Stanley will manage a broad and comprehensive internal audit program by directing the examination, review, analysis, appraisal and evaluation of fiscal and administrative operations of the university. He also will develop and maintain audit programs to assist with internal and external audits and is primarily responsible for setting the scope of each audit conducted.
Stanley also will serve as an advisor to various committees throughout the university and act as a liaison with external state and federal agencies and CPA firms.
He will supervise a central staff of four auditors.
