Staff Report. January 29, 2011.  RALEIGH, NC -- Cullie Tarleton has been appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to the North Carolina Lottery Commission.

He will fill an unexpired term that ends on Aug. 31, 2012. Tarleton was recommended for the job by Speaker Joe Hackney of the North Carolina House of Representatives.

The nine-member lottery commission supervises and administers the work of the North Carolina Education Lottery, which generates more than $400 million a year for education in the state. The proceeds of the lottery are spent on preschool education, class-size reduction, school construction and college scholarships.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to help oversee the work of our state lottery,” Tarleton said. “We have had a great deal of success for a lottery that is still relatively young, but it is important that we continue to have strong oversight if we are going to create a program that is successful for a long time. It’s also important that we run the state lottery in the most efficient manner possible so as to maximize the money being generated for education”.

Tarleton is a retired television and radio executive who lives in Blowing Rock. He is a former two-term member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, where he was chairman of the Commerce, Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee and held several other leadership posts.
