SNAPSHOT: Big Turnout for Blowing Rock Candidates Forum

By David Rogers. November 2, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- Perhaps fueled by a competitive mayoral race, interest and intrigue were running high Tuesday night as an estimated 125 residents and business owners converged on the Blowing Rock School Auditorium to listen to all six candidates for public office (Mayor and two Town Commissioner seats) make statements and answer questions.

There were few surprises, although some of the audience members' questions were quite pointed on key issues ranging from property tax increases, the interests of seasonal residents with second homes in Blowing Rock, town fiscal management, the decline in the town population and school enrollment, promoting a healthier business environment, standing up to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and ideas that can be gained from other small destination resort communities, among others.
