Search for Dara Watson Called Off in SC After Yet Unidentified Body Found

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC -- The search for 30-year-old Boone area native Dara Lee Watson may be coming to a sad close today, after a body was reportedly found this morning by authorities in South Carolina, near where her abandoned and burned out car was found on February 8.

321 Construction Update: February 17, 2012

Staff Report. February 17, 2012. RALEIGH -- Construction crews have begun clearing operations along U.S. 321 in Blowing Rock as part of the widening project, and traffic has been able to travel through the work area. However, there will be times where traffic will be detoured around the area when rock blasting and debris removal take place.

321 Construction Update: February 10, 2012

Staff Report. February 10, 2012. RALEIGH, NC Construction crews continue to clear the sides of U.S. 321 in Blowing Rock between the ABC store at 7960 Valley Boulevard and Broyhill Home Collections at 8486 Valley Boulevard as part of the widening project. This is preliminary work for installing erosion control measures such as silt fencing to keep materials from leaving the project area and ditch netting to filter sediment out of the water.

TRAVEL BULLETIN: February 9, 2012 -- Hwy. 105 Re-Opened

By David Rogers. February 9, 2012. BOONE -- High Country road conditions deteriorated this morning as ice formed with below-freezing temperatures. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution. Watauga County Sheriff's Department reported several accidents were attributed to icy road conditions on Hwy. 105, including a multiple car crash in the Grandfather community, near Smoketree Lodge. Traffic on Highway 105 South was closed for a period this morning, but as of 9:16 am, "Highway 105 has been re-opened and traffic is flowing."

Socio-economic Health Patterns Focus of Bezruchka Public Lectures

BOONE—Stephen Bezruchka, a senior lecturer in global health at the University of Washington, will present a series of lectures Feb. 16-17 at Appalachian State University. His visit is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Geography and Planning and the Borders and Bridges Grant program administered by the University Forum Committee. The public is invited to attend.
