Kemp Steen Passes Away, Blowing Rock Mourns

January 14, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- Blowing Rock resident and community leader Kemp Steen, 64, passed away in the early hours Friday morning, succumbing to complications from lung cancer with his family by his side at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Steen was a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, where he was active in the leadership of the church as an elder, having just retired as a member of Session, and where he served as a teacher in the men's Sunday School class.  He served on numerous church committees, including Stewardship, Finance and chaired the Endowment Committee.

He was employed as a real estate broker with Jenkins Realtors in Blowing Rock. He had been an active real estate professional for 28 years.  Prior to joining Jenkins in 2007, he was affiliated with Tellenkamp-Campbell Realty after owning and managing his own firm, Stonebridge Realty.

Among Steen's many interests were golf, hiking, travelling, and spending time with his family, particularly new grandson Knox.

"He was just a good 'ol boy," remembered longtime friend Terry Lentz. "Whether it was cooking a pancake breakfast, some other kind of volunteering in the community, or teaching the men's Sunday School class, Kemp was usually first in line to help.  He is going to be missed, that's for sure."

Steen was a native of Salisbury, North Carolina.  He graduated from Wingate College in 1966, then continued his education at Lenoir-Rhyne College, graduating with a degree in economics in 1968.  He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years.

He had recently served on the Wingate University Board of Visitors, playing a leadership role in Wingate's mission of growth and development.

Steen is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda Monroe Steen; daughter Laura Marie Steen, (Deedee Taylor) Hickory, NC; daughter Lana Steen Winebarger (Ed) and grandson Knox, Vilas, NC; and sisters Kathleen Steen Kershaw (Joe) of Deerfield Beach, FL; and Pattie Steen Fleming, Raleigh, NC; brother-in-law James M. Monroe, Jr. (Dot), Concord, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Austin & Barnes is making final arrangements.  A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 18th at noon at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, Blowing Rock. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, PO Box 393, Blowing Rock, NC 28605; Seby B.
