Watauga Students Reap $3 Million in Awards, Scholarships

BOONE, NC -- Graduation activities in the High Country are nearing a peak with Appalachian State behind us and Watauga High School ceremonies coming up Saturday, June 14. On Monday (May 26), the 2014 graduating class received nearly $3 million in scholarship awards from various organizations.

Then eager hands shot up to grill Mr. Aldridge with questions about the book, loosely based on Blowing Rock.

They were all part of the winning compositions submitted for the 1st Annual Blowing Rock News essay contest for girls competing for scholarships to AppState Women's Basketball's "Youth Basketball Camp."

FLASH ALERT: School Board Votes 3-2 to Keep 'House of Spirits'

BOONE, NC -- It would have been a courageous decision, either way, and the balloting reflected it.  By a 3-2 vote, the Watauga Board of Education voted to protect Watauga High School English teacher Mary Kent Whitaker's right to include Isabel Allende's "House of Spirits" on the required reading list for 10th grade honors English. The vote came after two hours in front of almost 200 people filling Courtroom #1 at Watauga County Courthouse. MORE TO COME...

BLOWING ROCK, NC – After launching the Chestnut Ridge capital campaign on June 24th with the groundbreaking of Blowing Rock’s new post-acute care facility, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System kicked things into high gear Saturday evening with its SOLD OUT "Patron’s Party" at Shadowlawn, the historic home of Ron and Paula Withrow, in the Mayview neighborhood.
