School Daze Just Ahead in Blowing Rock, High Country

Special Report to Blowing Rock School from Watauga County Schools. By Marshall Ashcraft. August 7, 2013. BOONE, NC -- The first day of classes in the Watauga County Schools for 2013-14 will be Monday, August 19th. August 19th will be a full-length school day. School buses will run their usual routes, lunch will be served, and the afterschool program will be open to students registered for the program.

BLOWING ROCK, NC -- With almost 6,000 books given to Blowing Rock School students, the Operation Mama Gaye Book Fair celebrated its five-year anniversary between April 30th and May 3rd in Blowing Rock. Wendy Estes and sister Kim Hartley organized the project promoting literacy in the High Country.

BLOWING ROCK, NC -- The threat of inclement wet weather and already rain-soaked grounds forced the kid-friendly games and activities inside on Saturday, but judging by the few hundred kids -- and their parents -- having fun at Blowing Rock School's "Spring Fling" you would never have known that it was planned for outside.

Blowing Rock Spring Fling Still On (Even if it Rains)

BLOWING ROCK -- Blowing Rock School's  "Spring Fling" scheduled for Saturday, May 4th (11:00 am to 4:00 pm), is still happening, in spite of recent inclement weather.  Organizer Stacey Gibson of the Blowing Rock School PTO emailed Blowing Rock News to advise members of the community that if the recreation field is too wet, the event will be moved indoors at the school

BOONE— Providence Day School in Charlotte won first place and Grandview Middle School in Hickory won second place in the regional N.C. State High School Mathematics Contest held at Appalachian State University on Wednesday, March 20. The schools won in the algebra 1 and common core math 1 portion of the contest.

Kafitz Stepping Down as Schools Superintendent

BOONE, NC -- Dr. David Kafitz' short, but volatile tenure as Watauga County Superintendent of Schools is apparently coming to an end.  A joint press release by Dr. Kafitz and te Watauga County Board of Education reports that the two parties have "mutally agreed to a buyout of his contract as Superintendent.

GREENSBORO, NC -- Thirteen students from Watauga High School’s Band and Orchestra program were selected for the Western Region Orchestra clinic held March 1-3 at UNC-Greensboro.  The WHS students were chosen by audition in January and were invited to participate in one of two orchestras comprised of the top players in the region.
