Memorial Day Service Scheduled at ASU Veterans' Memorial, May 27

Special Report to Blowing Rock News from University News Service. By Jane Nicholson. May 21, 2013. BOONE—Appalachian State University will hold a Memorial Day ceremony May 27 at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial on the west side of the Dougherty Administration Building. The ceremony will honor thosewho died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The public is invited to attend.

Gators, Clowns and All, Shriners Return Fun, Charity to Blowing Rock

BLOWING ROCK, NC -- While wide-eyed kids of all ages will marvel at the antics of clowns and "gators" up and down Main Street the weekend of June 1st, children laid up in hospitals all around the country will benefit when hundreds of men with "flower pot" hats come to Blowing Rock for fun, ceremony and to promote charitable causes.

With mostly sunny skies and 54 degrees (F) in the forecast for Saturday, scores (if not hundreds) of avid trout fishing enthusiasts are expected for "opening day" of trout season -- and a bunch of them will register their fish for a chance at winning valuable prizes, courtesy of the 34th annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby and the event's sponsors.

BOONE, NC -- Proving that lots of gray hair, thick glasses, strange wigs, and an octagenarian pom-pom squad CAN make all the difference, a team of scholars from Appalachian Brian Estates emerged victorious after 31 rounds of the 2013 edition of Adult Spelling Bee, produced annually by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce in benefit of education initiatives.
