SLIDESHOWS: Symphony Celebrates Americana, Indeed
By David Rogers. July 22, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- There is very little of "Americana" that tonight's Symphony by the Lake didn't cover tonight, from patriotic military ballads to Broadway anthems to popular fun. And fun it was, this 24th annual rendition of one of Blowing Rock's very best of events. Photos by David Rogers
Hosts Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and Chetola Mountain resort pulled some godly swings to keep the potentially bad weather at bay. As late afternoon yielded to the evening's opening act, The Harris Brothers, the threatening skies seemed to evaporate and the oppressive muggy heat of the day melted into a cool, comfortable night.
The gathering throng seemed in great spirits, sometimes even stopping a reporter, begging to have a picture taken with friends in hopes that it would be published. There was food and drink aplenty in the hospitality tents, and more than a couple were gracious hosts, sometimes event to a stranger, afraid of the unconscionable waste if not consumed.'
We saw politician friends and merchant friends and journalism friends -- heck we saw friends that defy classification.
And did we tell you that the music was beautiful and inspiring?
Here are some captured images, in seven brief slideshows:
