Groovy Nights Tuning Up for Smash Performances

By David Rogers. August 8, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- Often corny, frequently suggestive, but mostly crazily inventive and creative, the 2011 edition of "Groovy Nights" in benefit of the Blowing Rock Community Foundation promises to be another evening of fun and frolic.  Performances are set for August 14 (Sunday, 5:30 pm), August 16 (Tuesday, 7:30 pm) and August 19 (7:30 pm), at Blowing Rock Country Club.

Blowing Rock News got a first hand preview of this year's acts on Sunday, as the lineup of "performers" tuned up in dress rehearsal at the Country Club's lakehouse.  It was all very secretive, although golfers on a nearby tee may have gotten an eyeful, quite literally.  You have never seen the "Material Girl" like this, thanks to Karen Curlin, Marianne Hall, and Genie Starnes.

You just thought Elvis was dead, but he makes an appearance live, on stage, at Groovy Nights this year, in an engaging medley of his classics.  Funny, but as he has gotten older, Elvis looks a lot like Alton Russell.

You just neverr know what's in those "Wonder Bras", but Ruth Ellen Weems tells it like it is, bringing Patsy Cline to life with "She's Got You."  Weems may be able to make a mint in selling the patents to Victoria's Secret.

J.B. Lawrence has a new, one-word mayoral campaign theme -- RESPECT -- at least for this fun-filled night as wife Lynn takes on the persona of Aretha Franklin and hizzoner and son Justin perform as backup singers and dancers.

A highlight of the evening is sure to be Christina Aguilera's "Show You How to Burlesque" and Tina Turner's "Proud Mary", both brought to the stage by seductive grinders Gwen Dhing, Debbie Glover, Shelley Karaus, and Jenny Miller.

It's all great fun and Blowing Rock residents and visitors alike will not want to miss these showstoppers -- and several more, including some surprises that will not be revealed until showtime!

Tickets are $25, and reservations are limited.  Last year, the event sold out all three performances, so anyone wanting to go should not delay.  Inquiries and reservation requests may be directed to Joanie Shirley, 828-295-7906.
