"Groovy Nights" Performers Around the World Sighted, On Way to Blowing Rock
By David Rogers. August 9, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- There were separate sightings of Elvis, Patsy Cline and Tchaikovsky yesterday, in Montana, Oahu and Shanghai, respectively. They each told reporters that they were en route to Blowing Rock, North Carolina for the opening of "Groovy Nights III," at Blowing Rock Country Club on Sunday, Aug. 14 (5:30 pm); Tuesday, Aug. 16 (7:30 pm) and Friday, Aug. 19 (7:30 pm).
"I stayed in a Holiday Inn last night," Elvis shared with a Blowing Rock News correspondent in Billings. "It was much more welcoming than that place on Lonely Street I called the Heartbreak Hotel, where I stayed after my baby left me. Man, like I was all shook up in those days. This trip, I'm not so despondent so I think I'll put on my blue suede shoes and act like a hound dog. No crying in the chapel for me, not in Blowing Rock! And if I get a little rambunctious during my time in the High Country, why man, we're jus' gonna make that jailhouse rock!"
"Have you ever been lonely?" Patsy Cline asked a Blowing Rock News affiliate while standing on the beach at Diamond Head, arm draped around a burly surfer dude. "Gosh,it has always been so easy to get the lovesick blues. You know, sometimes your cheatin' heart just gets in the way of your happiness. But now that she's got you, I'm going south of the (Virginia) border to find me some happiness in Blowing Rock. I'm going to find me a man and we are goin' walkin' after midnight, if you know what I mean. Who knows, I might hook up with Pyotr Ilyich (Tchaikovsky). I hear he is all the rage!"
"They put on skits around iconic songs there in Blowing Rock's Groovy Nights program," Tchaikovsky explained to Blowing Rock News' China correspondent while visiting Shanghai on Monday, on his way to Blowing Rock for next week's Groovy Nights performances. "I'm told they lip-synch while interpretating the various songs' meanings with costuming and theatrics. Now I am really anxious to hear and see how those boys lip-synch my Nutcracker Suite, since there are no lyrics, but I really want to get a good look at Patsy Cline's wonder bra!"
"Folks just do not want to miss Groovy Nights III," the 2011 event chair Joanie Shirley told Blowing Rock News on Monday. "It's going to be a riot."
Especially for Blowing Rock News readers, the event committee has made available an online version of the Groovy Nights III reservations form. Simply click on the attachment below (under the public comments section of this article) to get more information on the performances. Reservations are recommended, since in past years the shows have all sold out.
