Community Service Day Loaded, Escapes Weather

By David Rogers. August 20, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- Blowing Rock Community Foundation president Sandy Miller and Community Service Day chair breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday, as inclement weather skirted the region and did little harm to the Foundation's biggest (and only) fundraising event. With 180 golfers and 50 tennis players competing for prizes and bragging rights, the 2011 version of Community Service Day turned out to be one of the most successful ever.  Miller told Blowing Rock News earlier in the week that the event expected to net between $110,000 and $150,000 between the sporting events and Groovy Nights III, but given that Groovy Nights this year was a record-setter in terms of money raised (nearly $20,000, it was announced Saturday night) and attendance, the upper reaches of that "take" was entirely possible.

Blowing Rock News stopped by the tennis and golf tournaments Saturday morning, returning for the dinner, auctions, and awards presentations in the evening.  Spirits were high, as it looked like funding for the foundation would reach new heights.  The Foundation awards some $65,000 each year in college scholarships, as well as grants to non-profit organizations serving the Blowing Rock community, according to a Foundation spokesperson.
