Reservoir Drawdown Leading to Discolored Water; Not Harmful Says Town

Staff Report. August 30, 2011. The Town of Blowing Rock, along with other water systems in the state, is experiencing some discolored water throughout the distribution system.

Due to unusually dry conditions and abnormally warm temperatures, the Town has encountered lower than normal water levels in the Town’s reservoir and elevated concentrations of naturally occurring minerals in the water. These conditions are contributing to the discolored water.

Although customers may notice a brown or yellow color in their water, it is not harmful, and is safe to drink. Throughout constant monitoring and testing, there have been no water quality violations.

Town employees are working with state officials to correct the problem and crews are flushing the system. For questions or additional information, please contact Water Plant Superintendent Tom McRary at 828-295-5225.
