SLIDESHOWS: Fall Festival 2011

By David Rogers. October 8, 2011. BLOWING ROCK -- The Chamber of Commerce could not have ordered a more glorious autumn day for Blowing Rock School's annual Fall Festival on Saturday. From face-painting, to hair-threading, to football tosses....from bouncy houses to pizza slices, it was wholesome family fun at its High Country best.

A number of vendors were selling their wares in benefit of the Blowing Rock School PTO, including children's book author Jonathan Graves -- AKA Blowing Rock's John Aldridge -- who took the time to not only sell books, but share the story and illustrations with fascinated young folks.

Of course, much of the activity centered around food, and there was plenty of it to be had -- from pasta to BBQ to hot dogs and everything in between.

At 1:30 pm, a few dozen student, parents, teachers and school administrators gathered up by the entrance marquee for a touching memorial service for young pre-K student Moses Haley, who lost his battle with disease on July 30.

The fire department was on the scene, letting anyone that wanted hold the hose that put out the "fires" (cardboard flames), just for the thrill of it, while fathers pointed out how things worked on a fire truck, a mother doctored an "ow-ee", and a young family sat on a wall, sharing a special event meal under bright, cotillion blue skies.
