SLIDESHOW: Winterfest! Chili Cookoff in Blowing Rock

By David Rogers. January 30, 2012. BLOWING ROCK -- Just 40 minutes into the 2012 Winterfest Chili Challenge, more than 600 people had already gained admission to the Blowing Rock School Gymnasium, where all the tasty sampling took place. By the event's end, Chamber of Commerce organizers Ray and Melissa Pickett estimated that more than 1,000 "hot stuff" aficionados (or wannabes) sampled the more than 50 chili recipes.  Beano and Tums were not provided.

While many a sweaty forehead was spotted among the "dining" participants, at least one group proclaimed that the chili was not hot enough. Speaking on behalf of the beverage vendor, Blowing Rock's Bob Darst deadpanned, "There is a direct coorelation between how hot the chili is and the number of cold beverage sold. We need to sell more beverages!  Next year they need to raise the heat factor!"

The winners that we know of:

  • Freestyle
    • 1st place -- Keith Miller
    • 2nd place -- Joel & Jordan Bowman
    • 3rd place -- Robin Miller
  • Best Table Decoration -- Twig's Restaurant
