ASU Women Topple Georgia Southern, 57-46

Special Report to Blowing Rock News from GoASU. February 4, 2012. STATESBORO, GA. – After a three-pointer by Mimi DuBose brought Georgia Southern within two points with 9:08 remaining in the game, Courtney Freeman and Anna Freeman led Appalachian State on a 13-4 run to win going away, 57-46, on Saturday at Statesboro's Hanner Field House.

The Mountaineers (17-3, 11-1 SoCon) defeated the Lady Eagles (7-15, 3-10) for the second time this season, picked up their sixth-straight win, and won in Statesboro for the first time since 2007.

Georgia Southern scored the final bucket of the first half to cut ASU’s lead to 30-27 at the break, and the Mountaineers held  a slim lead for most of the second half until going on their final 9-minute run.

Appalachian State shot 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the floor including a 7-for-9 mark from the charity stripe. Georgia Southern shot just 32.1 percent (18-for-56) and was just 5-for-11 from the free-throw line.

The Mountaineers coughed the ball up 23 times, compared to the Lady Eagles' 16 turnovers ASU finished with 15 assists, 10 steals and two blocks while GSU countered with 11 assists, 10 steals and two blocks.

C. Freeman led all players with 19 points while A. Freeman notched 12. Maryah Sydnor scored 10 points while Catherine Williams pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go with six points.

Georgia Southern saw two players score in double-figures, including DuBose (14) and Anna Claire Knight (10). Aishya Wofford was GSU’s leading rebounder with six boards.

The Mountaineers return to action on Monday when they travel to College of Charleston for a 7 p.m. contest against the Cougars.

  • ASU forced 10 or more turnovers for the 87th-straight game
  • the Apps improved to 54-11 when A. Freeman scores 10 or more points
  • Appalachian State finished with a 28-12 edge in points in the paint, 18-15 off turnovers and 11-5 on second-chance buckets
  • the Mountaineers improved to 40-10 in conference games since the start of the 2009-10 season
  • the Apps shot better than 48.0 percent in the first half for the fifth time this season... 
  • the Mountaineers failed to hit a three-pointer for the first time since Feb. 2, 2011 (that game was also against Georgia Southern)
