ASU Weekend Sports Roundup, February 18

By David Rogers. February 18, 2012. BOONE -- While the ASU Men's Basketball team was flying by the Winthrop Eagles, 76-64, at the Holmes Center on Saturday, several other sports were in action. Following is a summary compilation from GoASU reports.

BASEBALL: Wins Doubleheader Over Akron

ELON, NC -- Appalachian State University baseball got clutching hitting in Game One and strong pitching in Game Two to sweep a doubleheader from Akron by scores of 8-3 and 4-1 on Saturday evening at Latham Park.

With the victories, Appalachian came away from its first weekend of the season with a 2-1 record, going into next weekend’s challenging three-game set at No. 8 LSU.

In Game One, Daniel Kassouf paced the Apps’ 10-hit effort by going 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI. Trey Holmes also had two hits while Preston Troutman drove in two runs. Relief pitcher Tyler Moore overcame walking the first two batters he faced after entering the game in the fifth inning to allow just one run in 2.1 innings and earn the win.

In the nightcap, Appalachian rode a strong start by junior-college transfer Rob Marcello to the sweep. Making his first start in the Black and Gold since transferring from Florida’s Indian River State College, Marcello shut the Zips out for five innings, allowing just two hits, striking out five and walking none.

Appalachian opens its series at series with LSU at venerable Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. on Friday at 8 p.m. ET.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Davidson Breaks Mountaineers 10-Game Win Streak

DAVIDSON, NC – Appalachian State University women’s basketball saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end with a 61-54 loss at Southern Conference rival Davidson on Saturday.

The Mountaineers (21-4, 15-2 SoCon) were unable to overcome a slow start in the first half as the Wildcats (19-7, 15-2) used a balanced offensive attack and strong defense to complete the season sweep of the Apps.

Appalachian State was led by Maryah Sydnor, who posted her first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney Freeman scored 13 points and Raven Gary had a career-high 10 off the bench.

The Mountaineers return to action with their final home game of the season against Furman on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Center.

SOFTBALL: Crushing Doubleheader Wins vs. N.C. Central

DURHAM, NC -- Appalachian State University softball put on a hitting clinic with a combined 27 hits in a doubleheader rout over N.C. Central, 12-1 and 6-1, on Saturday at Thomas Brooks Park.

The Mountaineers (4-4) tallied 14 hits in game one and 13 in the nightcap and had nine players with two or more hits in the pair of contests. Freshman Caroline Rogers led the squad with five hits and four RBIs, while senior Megan Rembielak went 6-for-8 with three runs.  ASU's pitching staff held the Eagles (1-7) to nine total hits.

The Mountaineers continue their month long road trip at Columbia, S.C. at Gamecock Invitational on Feb. 24-26 and will square off with George Washington, South Carolina and Presbyterian.

WRESTLING: Near Sweep of Duke

BOONE -- Appalachian State University wrestling began its final weekend of the regular season in impressive fashion, routing Duke, 29-6 in non-conference action at Varsity Gymnasium on Saturday. Appalachian State (12-4) will wrestle its final dual against Davidson on Sunday, while Duke (3-10) looks forward to its ACC tournament in two weeks.

MEN'S TENNIS: Thumps East Carolina at Deer Valley Racquet Club

BOONE -- After a rough start to the season, the Mountaineers are gaining momentum, as Appalachian State University men’s tennis pulled off a 5-1 defeat of East Carolina at Deer Valley Racquet Club on Saturday. With their second-straight victory the Apps level off to 2-2 on the year, both wins coming at home, while East Carolina slips to 7-3.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Edged by Radford at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA -- Despite winning three matches, the Mountaineers were unable to hold off Radford, as Appalachian State University women’s tennis was edged by they Highlanders, 3-4, at the Burleson-Burrows Tennis Center on the Campus of Virginia Tech on Saturday. The team result came down to the final singles match, but Radford (4-2) was able to pull out the victory over Appalachian State (3-3).
