Angela Davis Lecture
Hits : 236

Appalachian State University’s Office of Multicultural Student Development presents the 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration with “An Evening with Angela Davis” Tuesday, Jan. 24. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium, followed by a 7:30 p.m. book signing and dessert reception. This event is free and open to the public.

Davis, renowned political activist and scholar, is the author of eight books. She has lectured throughout the United States, as well as in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and South America.

In recent years, a persistent theme of Davis’ work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. Through her activism and her scholarship during the last decades, Davis has been involved in the nation’s quest for social justice. Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – emphasizes the importance of building communities of struggle for economic, racial and gender equality.

Her appearance is part of the university’s Diversity Lecture Series and is co-sponsored by Appalachian’s Office of Multicultural Student Development, Department of Government and Justice Studies, Women’s Studies Program, Office of Equity Diversity and Compliance, and Arts and Cultural Affairs.
